2008 and Past Tour Journal Authors

Nancy Lovas
Rising 11th-Grader, Whitefield Academy
Hello all! I’m Nancy Lovas, your cheerful storyteller for the week! A sophomore at Whitefield Academy, I love Jesus and like to write. Many of the veteran readers might remember me from past years; I hope fondly. We’re on Mystery Tour this year, and I don’t know where we’re going, but you’ll find out as I do. I plan to entertain with a story about two marvelous stuffed animals in “The Adventures of Kiki and Coco.” I read an abominable amount of books, and I have a slight obsession with Guitar Hero. My best friend from England just emailed me for the first time in 6 months, so I’m still ecstatic about that. Basically, I try to live my life as God wishes, and with a smile on my face. I’m not always successful, though…

Recent Valdosta State University graduate, 1st-time counselor, former choir member, and perennial journal author.
Jeff Duggins
God's Light Counselor
This is my 17th tour with God's Light. I am the creator and keeper of the God's Light website, as well as the designated-mail-answerer for the God's Light email address. This will be my ninth year of editing the tour journal and writing for it.

Past Tour Journal Authors

Kimmi Herring
Rising 10th-Grader, Campbell High School
Beth Cohen
2006 Graduate of Osborne High School
(updated 2006)
[Editor's Note: Below is the bio I wrote for Beth in 2005, at her request. I think she was tired of writing them.]
Beth didn't want to write a new bio this year, so she asked me to write hers instead. I'm sure she expected something funny -- she mentioned the bio I wrote for Jennifer Hancock a few years ago, which was pretty funny if I do say so myself -- but I'm not in a very funny mood.

The truth is, Beth is not a real funny person. She's kind of scary, really. I've known Beth for quite awhile, and some of it has not been the most uplifting time of my life. She's pretty evil in the early morning, which comes into play quite a bit on choir tour. Oh sure, she writes a pretty decent journal entry, but she's not writing when she's in a bad mood, just screaming and throwing things. Beth gets a seat to herself a lot on the bus. Truthfully, it's a surprise to me that we still let her on the bus ... that darned Christian acceptance can really bite you sometimes.

I kid. Beth has been a devoted member of our youth group and God's Light, and a tireless worker. She has been a faithful journal author, which is more than I can say for a whole bunch of people who said they'd write and then never pried themselves loose from their latest crush long enough to put pen to paper. At any rate, the tour journal certainly would have suffered over the last few years without Beth's contribution.

OK, she's not looking over my shoulder anymore ... where was I?

Jessica Cobb
2005 Graduate, McEachern High School
(updated 2005)
Hey y'all! I'm Jessica Cobb and I'm SO excited about writing for the journal again! I am a recent graduate of McEachern High School. While I attended McEachern I was involved with sports medicine and student council serving as Senior Class President. I have been a member of Smyrna First my entire life. I have been involved with the music department for as long as I can remember, and this year I've gotten involved in the Praise Band. I've been a member of God's Light for 6 years now. This year I am serving as Co-President of God's Light on the leadership team. I played trumpet with the church orchestra for 5 and a half years as well. I have also become a lot more involved with UMYF this year than I have been in the past. Last summer I became a Smyrna Village Player when I took on the role of the Tiger-Lily and the Unicorn in the church's production of Wonderland. This will be my fifth year as a journal author and I plan to update pretty much everyday (assuming Jeff's computer doesn't eat my entries like last year...). With this being my last year I really hope to keep y'all updated and provide y'all with some really insightful entries.
Amanda Luke
Assistant Youth Coordinator
(By Jeff)

Amanda grew up at First UMC Smyrna and the youth choirs, including God's Light. She has served as youth intern and Youth Director, and is still active with the youth program as a God's Light and UMYF counselor.

Bev Fulgham (1998 Journal)
God's Light Counselor, 1994 - 1998

Bev was the Smyrna First UMC pianist for several years, and she accompanied God's Light on tour from 1994 - 1998.  We've been blessed with some wonderful musicians over the years, including a number of really talented piano players. Bev is definitely in that category. She and her family have moved to the Philadelphia area, where they are undoubtedly broadening the musical horizons of some other lucky churchgoers.

Dana Landry (1998,1999 Journals)
God's Light Member, 1994 - 1999

Dana wrote a regular column for the Vinings Gazette, a weekly paper published in the Vinings community near Smyrna, during most of high school. She was a member of God's Light for all 6 years, from 7th grade through 12th grade. Dana was active in drama during her God's Light tenure, particularly with the Cobb Children's Theater. She has a Bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia, and is working in the Atlanta area.
Jennifer Hancock
2002 Graduate, McEachern High School

[Editor's Note: Jennifer is now a graduate of Clemson University, and working for a church, I believe. Below is the bio she wrote for her last year in God's Light, and below that is the one I wrote when she never gave me a bio for the first two years.]

Hey my name is Jennifer Hancock.  I am five foot three with blonde hair and I enjoy long walks on the beach!  Okay, really, I have recently graduated from McEachern High School and I will be attending the great, amazing, fantastic school of Clemson University in the fall to major in Speech and Communications.  I chose Clemson because blondes look good in orange!  (Just kidding).  I really chose Clemson because I knew on my first visit there that that is where God wanted me to go, so I listened.  I hope some day to be a sports journalist/reporter or advertiser.   I have been a member of God's Light Youth Choir for six years and I have grown up at Smyrna First Methodist.  This year I have the position of Chaplain as a God's Light Officer.  I am a born and raised Georgia girl!  I accepted Christ into my heart in seventh grade.  I have enjoyed writing for the tour journal for the last two years and I look forward to sharing with y'all on tour this year.  Sit back and enjoy the ride!

P.S.  Please excuse the biography that Jeff wrote on me last year and the one that was posted prior to this one.  That's what happens when you are a bit un-punctual (i don't think that is a word).  Although, when it comes to tour journal writing I am always on time!

(By Jeff. This is what I wrote after Jennifer didn't give me a bio for 2 years.)

Jennifer Hancock was born in a village in rural Canada. Abandoned as a small child near a really good ice-fishing spot, she survived by eating small bugs and doing manicures and perms for passing polar-bears. Eventually, she was discovered by a kindly band of elk-hunters, who rescued her and returned her to civilization. Thus she was reared by the local housewives until Sue Hancock accidentally bought her out of the back of Rolling Stone Magazine, where she had been advertised for adoption, next to the Grateful Dead poster Sue had really wanted. Sue, being the kind soul that she is, decided to adopt Jennifer for good, little suspecting the large, undeductable portion of her annual income which would subsequently be devoted to Tommy Hilfiger clothing, hair products, and auto insurance. From this remarkable beginning springs Jennifer Hancock, perennial road-hazard, and proud product of McEachern High School.

Laurie Hairston (2000 Journal)
God's Light Counselor
(2000) This is my 2nd tour with God's Light (with a 2 year leave-of-absence).  I have been a member of Smyrna First UMC for 7 years and have worked with the youth group for 4 years.  I am very excited about going on tour again this year.  I went on choir tours in my youth choir growing up, and when Kim asked me to work with God's Light, saw an
opportunity to give back.  After my first tour, I realized that I will never be able to give as much to the kids as they give to me.  I'm looking forward to getting to know the youth better and building our relationships as we bring others to Christ.

Tiffany Whittington (1998 Journal) (Updated 2007)
Counselor

Tiffany was involved with with the choir year-round for several years, performing administrative tasks of all shapes and sizes. She was a choir tour counselor for two years.
